I've had #03 The Silver Bayonet since an Osprey sale in 2023 but only played it this year. There are also now some STL files available that can be printed out for the monsters and baddies and that's always good, giving you more choice of models for your warbands.
As you can see my chosen faction is the Egyptians rather than the more common European powers of the early 19th century.
This is a typical Joe McCullough game that uses playing cards to randomise mission events and glory be for once he doesn't use his standard d20 for combat but instead used 2d10's! That instantly got my attention and I'm wondering now if I can port this mechanic over to the combat for Stargrave so I can play more Stargrave.
(For those long timers here, you know the time-honoured d20 is not a favourite of mine simply due to the sheer swinginess of a roll.)
The fact this game is based on accomplishing mission objectives and comes with solo-specific rules and missions boosts this way up my ranking and the entire historical spooky fantasy vibe the game gives off is right up my alley. It's the 19th century version of Anno Domini, in fact. Although I have seen games where they used an even earlier era to play this. Tudor, if I'm not mistaken or during the period of the Puritans (Solomon Kane) and the witch hunts.
As is typical with black powder games… you really need to think long and hard when and if you want to fire your weapon because it just takes so long to reload. It’s very similar to Anno Domino 1666 where you’d normally fire your pistol at your opponent before charging in with your rapier!
However, because they had rifles by this period, they are slightly more accurate in shooting and you do get the option to stay back and just spend both your actions to reload so you can fire again. you'd just better make this guy your marksman or sniper while all other members of your warband use their pistols and swords to go toe to toe with the foes and grab the objectives.
For 2026 I need to use AI to make an STL for a Napoleonic era troll so I can move on to the next mission in the solo campaign.
Next: ANOTHER new game! It was a toss up between that one and Silver Bayonet though for #02 and #03 respectively.
