Moving on from Talomir Tales is #09: Port Royal. Otherwise known by its full title "Port Royal: An Adventure Skirmish Miniatures Game set in the Searover's Caribbean"... I suppose to distinguish it from OTHER board games named Port Royal (of which there are several on BGG.)
This game isn't ranked pretty high for now because the game really shines in a campaign setting where your crew of cutthroats can improve and level up over time. You need to grab loot and recruit more scallywags to your crew to really pull ahead of the other competing factions and I don't have enough minis or the time to paint new minis to play a campaign.
Added to this is the fact that I kind of have buyer's regret over this game, mainly due to the extremely high shipping costs. The shipping cost as much as the game! I should've just bought the digital rules and tokens and 3D printed the minis... which would've allowed me to buy 02 Hundred Hours instead.
As a game, it's all right. Very period, historical flavour and who doesn't like pirates? There's a bit of leeway for some Jack Sparrow type shenanigans. But it's very grounded in the real world and much like 02 Hundred Hours, combat is deadly. One hit that you don't dodge or evade or otherwise get lucky with some cover means you're dead. Or out of action if you're playing a campaign then you need to roll to see what happens to said crew member.
I've picked up some more STLs due to the Black Friday MMF Sales so expect to see more of this game in 2026.
