Necromunda Finale!

I just realised with all the busy-ness of my life these past few months that I overlooked posting the finale to my Necromunda Underhells solo campaign, so here it is.

Having descended deep into the Underhells, the Tek Hunter Secundan Incursion Gang pause for one last stop before tackling the beast in its lair. They now know they face something sinister… and horrific. The emanations from the darkness ahead of them would unnerve anyone who wasn’t a Spyre Hunter… if it wasn’t for the …?  that dampened the sheer terror that was ever-threatening to swamp them at every turn. With the ?? however, the feeling was manageable.

The Van Saar Tek Hunters are even joined by another Spyre Hunter… a Malcadon that they’d encountered in an earlier level above. He had come to join them for the final battle.

Breaching the final level, the Tek Hunters charge in, and they manage to take out the Brood Scum waiting for them in the darkness. Photo goggles help them to shoot with unerring accuracy this time round. All the misses from earlier levels have been redeemed here.

There are 3 Malstrain waiting for the Tek Hunters, but the Orrus simply charges ahead and downs one instantly, while the Malcadon downs the other.

The Malstrain Alpha retreats further into the darkness, hoping to pull off an ambush on any Hunter unwary enough to turn their backs.

To no avail! The Orrus Hunter, his hunting rig unlocked via his many kills, proves too powerful for the Malstrain Alpha. The Alpha manages to wound the Hunter. But the Orrus counterattacks and puts down the Malstrain Alpha once and for all!

That was kind of… anticlimactic, truth to tell. It should have been a knock down, drag out final battle, but with the Van Saar Tek Hunters and the Spyre Hunter improving themselves after every level with better skills and equipment ... especially the Orrus Hunter who will now only miss a shot or combat on a “1”… it was no contest. The Malstrain side cannot level up or improve. They only get more bodies to throw at the Tek Hunter Incursion Gang and even four Malstrain Genestealers are no match for TWO Spyre Hunters.

Truth to tell though, the other Spyre Hunter wasn’t as good as the Orrus, simply because he hadn’t unlocked any suit upgrades and so was at the level of the Orrus Hunter at level 1, at the start of the descent into the Underhells.

The Tek Hunters were at full strength and managed to cover for the Malcadon Hunter, leaving the Orrus Hunter to deal with the Malstrain Alpha.

Overall though, this simplified Necromunda campaign was very enjoyable, and gave a glimpse into what a full blown campaign can be, with all the post-battle actions, upgrades and trading post purchases unrestrictedly available.

The full blown Hive Secundus campaign will shine with 2 or more players playing the Secundan Incursion Gangs, and the Malstrain and Brood Scum will take on the role of wandering monsters, able to be commanded by the players to act as spoilers to the other opposing players. That’s very much in line with Mantic’s Walking Dead: All Out War zombies and The Silver Bayonet monsters.

If you can pick up a second hand box for Hive Secundus without the minis but with everything else intact, I’d say go for it! You can always proxy your own Incursion Gang and you can enjoy the delights of the Underhell for yourself!

Since ending the campaign, I got myself an A1 Mini FDM printer as mentioned in earlier posts because it just made economic sense. Buying terrain alone, whether exclusively from GW or less pricy 3d party suppliers is still a one way street that ends with more and more money being spent.

I worked out the cost of printing a full Zone Mortalis board and it worked out to just slightly LESS than buying all GW terrain or slightly more than buying 3rd party terrain.

And now that I've printed out my Zone Mortalis terrain, I'm free to print even MORE to add to the verticality of my future Necromunda games (remember this specific Underhells campaign is played on ground level, like a bog standard dungeon crawler).

And I've already used the printer to print even MORE terrain for my desert skirmishes and post-apocalyptic terrain for my Five Klicks from the Zone campaign (which I'll write about at the end of the month... promise!).
