2021 Top 10 Solo Skirmish Games Countdown : #2!

#2 - Horizon Wars : Zero Dark

This was my #1 in 2020. What happened that it dropped by one spot? Well, it turns out that I made a mistake in the deployment of the Red Force (AI force) where they were deployed in a 12 x 12 grid across the entire 4x4 table. They should have been deployed in a 12x12 grid around the main objective. On the one hand, it made the game a bit more difficult as you can’t sneak up as easily. On the other… it kind of makes things a bit boring as all enemy forces are clumped around the centre.

Having played both ways, I know which I prefer and I’ll probably have a mixture of half deployed in the centre grid, and half in a random grid across the entire table.

Also, I played another game this year that really gave me 90%+ of what I've been looking for, and that's why Zero Dark dropped a spot. Those of you who have been following this blog can probably guess what my #1 for 2021 is.

With all that said… all I wrote about Zero Dark last year still holds true. It is  an awesome solo game that’s only improved by the Nemesis expansion that adds a full blown narrative campaign, which is where the game truly shines. I always say you haven't really done solo gaming until you've been hunted around the table by a giant stompy Mech 😝

If you want a minis agnostic game with solid rules and game play… you can’t go wrong with Zero Dark. Highly recommended.
